Google Finds Accounts Linked to Russia Bought Election Advertising –

SAN FRANCISCO — Google has uncovered evidence that Russian brokers purchased advertisements on its own extensive networks in a bid to interfere with all the 2016 presidential effort.

Using accounts considered to be linked to the Russian authorities, the representatives bought {}4,700 worth of search advertising and more conventional display advertisements, according to a individual familiar with the provider’s ongoing internal investigation that wasn’t permitted to talk about it openly.

Google discovered those balances based on particular data it found and results in other tech businesses, the individual said.

The 2016 presidential elections marked the first time that Google enabled targeting with political leanings. It enabled two classes — left-leaning and right-leaning. But, Google’s analysis hasn’t found any proof that the Russian advertisements used these classes or geographical parameters to target certain classes, the individual said.

The advertisements mostly emerged alongside Google’s search results on sites outside its network of websites, the individual said. It wasn’t clear if the advertisements seemed on YouTube or Gmail.

The investigation is ongoing, so there’s an opportunity that Google may come across different advertisements from Russian-linked reports, the individual said.
